The arepa is more than just a food; it is a symbol of identity, culture and tradition in Antioquia and Colombia. Its presence on the dining tables of the people of Antioquia is non-negotiable, featuring from breakfast right through to dinner, and it is so emblematic that even international figures, presidents and business leaders have been presented with a necklace made of arepas – a gesture that highlights its importance in the region.

This mixture of white or yellow maize, roasted on a grill or hot stone, has been a staple of the Antioquian diet since pre-Hispanic times. In fact, in the ancient Antioquia la Grande, the arepa was not only a daily staple, but also a reflection of the hard-working, enterprising and resilient character of the Paisas.

For the people of Antioquia, the arepa is everything. Not only does it represent tradition and flavour, but it has also become part of everyday language, where it can mean anything from appreciation and admiration to humour and mischief.
