In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Medellín’s elite spearheaded urban reforms that redefined architecture and the use of public space. Chicherías and vivanderos were banned, and in their place the construction of gardens, parks and extensive green spaces was encouraged, thereby improving the city’s hygiene and appearance.
Bolívar Park became the hub of social life, hosting social gatherings, cultural events and musical performances. Colonial and Republican-era houses were built around it, home to influential families who reflected the city’s economic and social growth. This development cemented the status of areas such as Calle Junín, recognised for decades as Medellín’s main social and commercial thoroughfare.
