Driven by the desire to find fertile land, improve their living conditions, and escape small-scale farming, settlers from Antioquia in the 19th century embarked on a historic process of territorial expansion known as the Antioquian colonization. By blazing trails through the Andean mountains, these pioneers founded new towns, created regional trade networks, and established an agricultural economy, excelling particularly in coffee cultivation.
This process was key to the consolidation of a regional identity based on cultural values such as hard work, rural self-sufficiency, and entrepreneurial spirit—characteristics that still define Paisa culture.
Colonization also led to the strengthening of transportation and trade networks and fostered the development of a model of land use based on small-scale rural land ownership, which promoted relative social equity compared to other regions.
