Bridge-building in Antioquia arose as a necessity for progress, reflecting the entrepreneurial spirit and determination of its people to overcome geographical challenges. Among these, the River Cauca represented one of the greatest natural barriers, hindering communication between the Sovereign State of Antioquia and the south of the country and the Caribbean Sea.
For centuries, the methods used to cross the Cauca River were rudimentary, unsafe and slow. Travellers and settlers had to rely on rafts, canoes and makeshift ferries, braving the dangers of the fast-flowing waters. However, the need to improve transport infrastructure in Antioquia led to the construction of strategic bridges, facilitating trade, mobility and economic growth in the region.
