The ‘silletero’ is an iconic figure of the Santa Elena region, whose history is deeply intertwined with Antioquia’s coffee-growing tradition. In the early days, the ‘silleta’ was an ingenious means used by farmers to transport and sell their produce in the city of Medellín. Flower sellers, with their silletas, would wander the streets and neighbourhoods, delivering a variety of fresh produce – mainly flowers – to the homes of wealthy families.
Over time, the craft of silletero evolved into a true form of floral art. The silleteros, who had previously been traders, began to create elaborate silletas, demonstrating a keen aesthetic sense and great manual dexterity. These impressive floral arrangements are proudly displayed during the Desfile de Silleteros, a cultural event held annually in Medellín, showcasing the richness of Paisa culture and craftsmanship.
