The Mountains
This beautiful town dates back to the 17th century, when Don Ignacio Castañeda and his wife, Javiera Londoño, settled in El Retiro to mine the El Guarzo mines with their slaves. Doña Javiera signed a will in which she granted freedom to 140 slaves and ceded the most productive of her mines to them. They were the first to free slaves in the Americas. Beginning in 1786, white, mestizo, mulatto, and freed Black people began settling in the area.

ITINERARY:We’ll arrive at the town of El Retiro; along the way, you’ll be able to enjoy the scenery of the San Nicolás Valley. You’ll stroll through its streets, rich in history, and we’ll stop by some carpentry workshops where you can watch local artisans at work with wood. Next, we’ll enter Los Salados Ecopark for a boat tour of the reservoir. Finally, you’ll sample some delicious chicharrón from La Cantaleta. Finally, we’ll head back to the hotel to wrap up this adventure.
