For much of its history, the railroad operated in two sections that were disconnected from one another. The Alto de la Quiebra pass was the greatest obstacle and was not crossed until the early 20th century. Once this mountain was penetrated, an era of prosperity and abundance began. This tunnel is part of the Paisa collective imagination and is associated with a people’s tenacity in carrying out difficult tasks under adverse conditions.
