Descendants of Spanish settlers – mainly from Andalusia – and people of mixed Spanish and indigenous heritage, the Paisas developed a unique identity, characterised by their entrepreneurial spirit, hard work and strong attachment to their traditions.
Since time immemorial, they have played a leading role in mining, mule-driving, trade and coffee cultivation – sectors that have driven the region’s economic and social development. Thanks to their tenacity and ability to adapt, the Paisas have managed to transform a mountainous and rugged landscape into a prosperous region.
One of the most admired aspects of Paisa culture is its sense of cooperation, hospitality and generosity. Solidarity and mutual support have been fundamental in overcoming the historical challenges faced by this mountain-ringed region.
