Coffee cultivation in Antioquia began in the late 19th century, when four or five medium-sized plantations were established in the municipalities of Titiribí and Fredonia, located in southwestern Antioquia. Although their development was slow, these plantations marked the beginning of what we now know as Colombia’s coffee culture, a tradition that transformed the economy and identity of the people of Antioquia.
Unlike other regions of the country, Antioquia was not home to large estates. Most farms were small to medium in size. This distinctive feature stemmed from the colonization of Antioquia, a process that favored the distribution of land among peasant families and laid the foundation for the current Coffee Cultural Landscape, now recognized as a World Heritage Site.
The agricultural model based on family-run coffee farms not only boosted the local economy but also gave rise to a cultural identity deeply rooted in rural work, the tradition of muleteering, and the value of collective effort. Today, many of these farms offer authentic experiences to those who wish to learn about the history of coffee, from seed to cup.
