The Paisa muleteer was a key figure in the history and economic development of Antioquia. His work went beyond the simple transport of goods; he had to possess a thorough understanding of the climate, an excellent sense of direction, knowledge of veterinary and human medicine, business acumen, a deep understanding of rural life and great physical stamina.

The mule drivers opened up routes, boosted trade, established inns and settlements, and played an active part in the expansion of Antioquia’s colonisation into new lands.
In the 19th century, the mule-trading industry in Antioquia drove Medellín’s economic progress by facilitating trade between regions isolated by the complex mountainous terrain; it stands as a symbol of identity and pride for families in Antioquia, becoming a legacy that still endures in the region.
