The Antioquia Railroad marked a milestone in the history of transportation and railway infrastructure in Colombia. The first rail on the initial 24-kilometer stretch between Medellín and the town of Caldas was laid in early 1911, a pivotal year in the development of the region’s railway system. That same year, an enthusiastic crowd witnessed the arrival of the first locomotive to travel the route between Alto de La Quiebra and Medellín Station, solidifying the department’s rail connection.
Its construction involved designing routes through mountainous and rugged terrain affected by active geological faults. To overcome the deep gorges in the region, high-span and long bridges were built, as well as tunnels that can still be admired today as a testament to the railway engineering of that era.
